Red Teaming Challenges

Autodesk University Red Teaming Exercise

November 13, 2023

Details on this cutting-edge research at AU 2023 are below.

Autodesk: the global leader in design-and-make AI research

As a leader in design-and-make-related AI research, Autodesk is pursuing original research to identify potential threats and concerns related to the use of AI in the industries we serve. Autodesk is committed to responsible, ethical, and transparent AI development and we need your help. Since 2018, the Autodesk Research AI Lab has published over 50 peer-reviewed research papers in leading journals and conferences, including topics on foundational 3D-geometry, machine learning, generative AI, and more.

“Red Teaming” for responsible, ethical, and transparent AI

Traditionally applied to cybersecurity concerns, red teaming is an exercise that involves thoroughly questioning plans, policies, systems, and assumptions through an adversarial approach. This can be done by either an external contractor or an internal team that employs methods to encourage an outside perspective. The primary objective of red teaming is to combat cognitive errors like groupthink and confirmation bias that can hinder an individual or organization’s decision-making and critical thinking abilities.

Join the generative AI Red Teaming challenge at AU!

At DEF CON 2023, the annual hacking conference, Dr. Chowdhury led a red teaming exercise with the intent to break or “hack” a generative AI model. The unique aspect of this exercise is that it expanded the notion of a “hack” to include “embedded harms” – that is, naturally occurring mistakes (like hallucinations) that happen in the course of regular use.

Autodesk will apply this approach not to cybersecurity concerns, but to the responsible use of AI technologies. During these upcoming red teaming exercises at AU 2023 join us to learn more about AI applications and explore the potential opportunities, impact, and concerns.

The definition of ‘red teaming’ has evolved from technology and security experts to individuals with deep subject matter expertise in an applied field. Join us as we attempt to proactively identify opportunities and concerns for design-related models.
